sidestep censorship

youtube is blocked by turkish isp`s. technically it means:

1. the name server entries are changed to the ip`s 212.175.13.55 and similar, so that users who use turkısh name servers see a announcement, that the page is blocked.
2. the original ip`s of www.youtube.com, e.g. 208.65.153.253, are blocked by turkish isp`s.

following ways to reach this site are working:

1. using tor, tested in a configuration where tor ıs lıstenıng to privoxy at localhost, easy to install like explained here (win) here (mac) or here (lınux). This is giving you quıte good anonymity, which is always a good idea, espacially in times, state authoritis try to show their power in the virtual world in.
2. using a static web proxy. there are some simple to use web interfaces like proxy.org, where you do not even need to configure any browser or internet properties.

both methods have the disadvantage that the connectivity is significantly reduced. other ways could be faster, espacially if some people outside turkey would donate some traffic capacities and provide fast secure proxies.

Even its really not a big deal to sidestep this demonstration of protecting the (heterosexual) honor of a nation, most users wouldn`t make this effort - and to be honest, most youtube clips it isn`t worth for. It is just to stay independent, to get access to the information you like to get.
More relevant than this action, which is more show than really the attempt to get control over the flow of bits and bytes, is to watch the traffic and try to structure the data to get an overview over activities, attitudes and communication structures. And to stay constantly anonymous and unanalyzable is a big deal. Some will, most not, even if they wanted. Nevertheless, even if politically scandalizing is as important as to be clever enough to don`t let you be impressed by this cheap demonstration of power. EDİT: i didn`t finish the sentence, let`s say: … stay clever.

EDIT2: for those who have access to a shell account with ssh-daemon ouside turkey there is a nice solution:
- establish a ssh tunnel: ssh -L8001:youtube.com:80 username@yourresurceoutsıdeturkey.org and type in your password.
- send your browser request now to localhost:8001
this is pretty fast dependıng to the resource connectivity, and the ınformation, that you connect to youtube is not seenable, but not a solution for evryone. maybe someone can establish a open tunnel slot, but who will be able to carry all the traffıc load of youtube …

  2. national liberals in turkey could say: ataturk wouldn`t have liked this. he was the father(!) of liberty and democracy in turkey … and find enough material too9 proof in lots of his speeches.
