how long does the pope sleep?

if you are consuming german media, as i do, you just here pope pope pope. it seems to be a big event and as i stay in istanbul, i decided to get it live. first i did some internet research on were he is staying. he stays at his colleague Bart in fener. thats just across the golden horn, so i decided to take a boat there. but there was no. ferry, no boat taxi, nothing. so i walked, all the bridge, all the way to the borders of the security district.

fener map

all the police concept reminded me of some the tactics at nazi demonstration in germany, a very decentralized concept, some strange barriers and a zone, were nobody could go. but beside that there was nothing, maybe 30 people were interested in any way, trying to get a look to something. some buses came with accredited catholics and some press, diplomatic stuff, but nobody else took notice.

on my way back i got a little surprized, cause even if it is not a event for anybody the impact on the city was enourmous. all the traffic was blocked in from taksim to aksaray and from sirkeci to halic. and all the people walked. that was impressing. so a pope in town means less traffic and i think it was the first time, were i walked at tarlabaşı bulvarı in the middle of the street. were the pope has been all teh time? - no idea.

but i don`t give up, i go on to get a view. tomorrow I want to go to sultanahmet to get a view on him, as i want to sing “I hob an papst gsehng”

papa ratzi …

will visit istanbul. by chance i saw a islamistic manifestation against, organized by saadet partisi. A strange situation a I don`t want to take any position in a conflict between fundamentalists about which believe is more true. about some 10.000 people where gathering near mecediyeköy, far less than expected by some, but all in all I don`t think its such a big issue as some european media are making it. just a remark: also this issue was a possibility for showing a antisemitic view and wave palestinian flags. however İ don`t get the link and i don`t think there is any. I decided to go, when the prayer time came, cause i didn`t like the idea to stand between thousands of praying people.
lets see whether i will do some resaerch about the event, but all in all i think its overestimated by far.

keep on staying awake.

I dıdn`t see a morning like this for long time. working until late night i just did`t want to slepp and now the day started. i` looking forward to maybe ten hours daylight. normally ı maybe have count 2, maximum 5.
yes ı`m exited by being visited as well. but now i`m hungry, ı will start with a good breakfast.

saturday night fever

oh, İ thought İ had to go out on Saturday night. everybody does. İ was bored. sometimes i found good party, but yesterday i had the feeling, people are just going out, cause they think they have to. two vodka could not bring me to any euphoric feeling so after some hours i went back haome to my computer. it is really more exciting.
İ decided to use KDE instead of icewm and installed successfully kile and firefox 2.0. and now i have a working spell checker. You will see the difference for sure.
İ hoped that kde will solve my problems using skype, as it has its own sound wrapper, but it does not have any effect. mh. thats still an unsolved problem. İs the spell checker a kde-tool or is it integrated in the new firefox? İ will see. and is there any easy solution for switching the wm like switchdesk for some linux-systems? more and more questions appear.
by the way, as i feel like the best option to spend my time is dealing with my computer, i redesigned my blog a little bit. floating images and tables here and there should give it a more chaotic style.

my first tech howto

I announced here, I want to do a new install. so step 1: howto backup masses of music with strange filenames and directory strukcture from a netbsd sytem to a fat32 external hard disk. its not so easy. my latest problem:

/home/vera/sound/djkoze/Dj Koze - Music is Okay (Musepack MPC MP+) Full Album/15 - Dj Koze - Jackpot.mpc
Prepare volume #3 for `musikbkp.tgz’ and hit return:
gtar: home/vera/sound/djkoze/Dj Koze - Music is Okay (Musepack MPC MP+) Full Album/15 - Dj Koze - Jackpot.mpc: file name too long to be stored in a GNU multivolume header
gtar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now

most of the problems were caused by this strange fat32 system. but at least its a system, were both, windows and linu/uniX systems can read and write on. The one problem is, that fat 32 does not like any longer filenames than 8 signs plus three after the dot. so it changes the file names. therefore i had to use an archiver, but it might be more comfortable anyway. the second problem with this fat32 is, that file can not exceed the abou 4 GB, which is never enough to store masses of music. so you have to split. i decided to use tar - even if i would like to make the music accessible to windows users, but using zip didn`t seem to be successfull and i didn`t even find a man page for rar.

tar is a stange tool with lots of options. it seems to be developed for storing data on tape. these are normally big enough to store data at one volume. for splitting files. so you`ll need the gnu extention. gtar.

so you can use the commands:

cd [path to directory you want the .tar file to be stored]
gtar cv -M -L 3000000 musikbkp.tar /home/user/sound/

after some while - you can see the backup.tar growing by opening a new shell changing to the backup directory and type ls -la. the tar should show this:

/home/vera/sound/sterolab/02 - Cybele’s Reverie.mp3
/home/vera/sound/sterolab/09 - Emperor Tomato Ketchup.mp3
Prepare volume #2 for `musikbkp.tar’ and hit return:

instead of changing tapes you can rename the output in order to write a second musikbkp.tar using the other shell

-rwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 2974945280 Nov 11 14:27 musikbkp.tgz
bash-3.1# mv musikbkp.tar musikbkp.tar.01
bash-3.1# ls -la
total 6093888
drwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 32768 Nov 10 22:20 .
drwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 32768 Jan 1 1980 ..
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 3072000000 Nov 11 14:28 musikbkp.tar.01
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 47974400 Nov 11 14:30 musikbkp.tgz

nice procedure, isn`t it?

some words about the gtar options. c for create, v for verbose, detailed messages, you could add a z for compression, but the effect for stoting mp3 is nothing. -M is setting the multivolume management and -L is giving the limit in KB. -f is defining the output file.

p.s.: i don`t know howto unrar this stuff, so if someone wants to comment on this?…

the neverending story: discussion about a ban on NPD

about 5 years ago the attempt to ban the NPD failed. the constitutional court canceled the case, because the secret servive refused to name its “informers”, nearly every day a new one in leading position in the NPD appeared. The court couldn`t be sure, if a statement is one of the NPD or more one of the secret service.
Some said, maybe the hole NPD is more a project of the secret services than a political party, but this is not really the point. the informers are nazis before they get on the payroll f “Verfassungsschutz”. Just the court couldn`t grant a fair trial as long as the activities of the service went on. and those refused to stop.
All the story was kind of a deasaster. NPD got stronger, reached the 5% limit of voters to get into to local parliaments. And it seemd to be unbannable, so that many nazis outside the party joined, as other organizations were banned, especially the so called “Freie Kameradschaften”, quite loose organized and very militant mostly young nazis, were banned more often as a criminal organization.
The discussion on a ban on NPD never stopped since that time. mostly it was just a short issue after the public was shocked by hate crimes or elections. it got part of the routine of consternation.
But at the moment, there is a new drive in the discussion. instead of lamenting about the constitutional court some get more honest. while Beckstein, CSU, law and order hardliner openly says, he considers the observation more important than a ban, others now want to stop the observation in order to be able to ban the party.
Anyway, the observation is not very useful, because the informations are not used in order to protect the informers. even the police is hardly getting anyinformation from the secret service. the public is not getting any information, which is not open to public anyway.
The other question is, what can a ban solve. the neonazi movement will not be stopped by this. But nazis need a official organization for some reasons, for getting official access to public resources and the status of a legal party gives access to more conservative rightwring minds. And a ban would weaken the neonazis, cause they would have to reorganize. so all in all I think it wouldn`t be the end of the problem, but I see some advantage in a ban.
