travel part II

I still ow you the second part of my trip. or even more.

ok, I arrived in evpaoria, a nice tourist ressort in krim semi-island. it was a little bit surprising, because i thought, this would be just next to odessa, which is pronounced somehow like adeisa by the way, what i had to learn at first and of course i had to lern some basics of ukrainian geographie as i had no map and i wanted to hitchhike somehow to northwest ….

in fact it took me about 1,5 day to come to adeisa, and i even didn’t want to go there, but things developed like this. on the road I already had a truckgoing to warsaws, but police stopped it and he couldn’t go on, for what reason ever. i arrived in odessa about night, no idea how to go on, which road might go out of the city and so on. asking people brought me more into trouble, cause those middle class kids who do speak english have heard about hitchhiking just from horror movies and the one who tried to help me in the end more or less tried to rip me, but it seems, his mind was influenced by whatever drug, so even this plan wasn’t as mauch clear. at least he tried to threaten me and is was kind of annoying.

but nevertheless i found a truck going in my direction and within the next 24 hours I arrived in warshawa. these strange to guys, who picked me up in the middle of the night in absulot darkness, so dark, that i decided its no use to try to put up my tent, those two guys need to be discribed a little bit more:
they did some business in ukraine and where pretty well off, nice anyway and like travalling seemed to be there hobby, they found very interesting, what i did. and could imagine, what i need, some bed an shower and some breakfast …
but quite strange was something. they had to emphasize, that they are not together and after some while staying in the house of the one i wondered: why? you have a huge house and you seem to be a little bit lost here, alone. you both seem to like each other quite much. anyway, its just an idea, you might be more happy not to fear to much close to each other.

the rest is told quite quick … the guy who wanted to control my ticket in warsws metro and let me run, the couple how brought me quite a bit in direction to gdansk, gdansk, where i spent a night doing my way to gdynia - a strange night, cause all the hooliganstyle drunken in saturday night where a little bit strange, so i didn’t really feel like finding a place to sleep.

the ferry was quite funny, cause i managed to eat in the truckers lounge for free, fish, meat, equisite sea food and coffee, juice, evrything. I didn’t know, wether i will get anything the next two days, so i decided to eat as much as possible. and just when i decided, I couldn’t eat any longer, I got my last coffee and I was asked, weather I am really a truck driver. I said no and said thanks for the fish …

so tahnks to stena line, anyway, it was fair, but your prices for the ferry are high enough …

so thats quite all, the last 2 days to trondheim where not so easy, butthats what evryone expacts from hitching in scandinavia.

travel part I

8 1/2 days “on the road” - there is to much to tell. I wanted to wrtite a log, but my preparations where so chaotic, I forgot to pack a pen.
ok, first of all I want to say thanks. to all the people who gave me a lift, of course, for driving and the 100’s od coffees and the conversation, even or especially if it just was that, what i could do in russian - or body language of course.
thanks to B. for organizing my boat trip over the black sea.

I have to be detailed at this point: it was not easy to find a suitable boat to ukraina. at last I had a peace of paper with two numbers - one of B’s friend, which was considered to be my friend now, and one of somebody working in the RoRo-Truck-Ferry Company’s Headquarter. I was instructed to go to the harbour and ask for this guy. At the harbour there was nobody but some border police and customs at a gate. a little bit unsure I asked for this guy and evryone new him and my ne friend, but both werent there. one phonecall, and evrything was cleared. I was pleased to go on the ferry.
entereing the ferry, there was nobody. just the empty freight room, which should be filled with trucks during the night. I was climbing some narrow steps up, deck 1, deck 2, ond deck 3 I found the first persons. I told them, that I am a passenger and they found sombody to find me a room.
slowly more and more truckseached the ship and at the end, the next morning, about 50 men where on board. evrybody knowing each other, but a little bit separated in two groups. the turks in the big restaurant room and the “russian” which ment basicly evrybody not being turk, so called because they used russian as lingua franka - in the other. only men. The “Russian” TV was showing action movies about russian army elite troops in Kavkas. The Turk TV music shows of arabesc pop. playing Tavla (Backgammon) or this rommee style game, I don’t knoe the name of.
all in all I spent nearly two days on the ship. being kind of integrated as the tourist arkadas, more in the turk part of this special society, as my language abilities where making me communicating there more, and as the ammount of alcohol drunk there was less and so conversation a little bit more comfortable.

travel preparations part 2

I was nearly giving up my plan to go to ukraine by ship. no real ınformatıon, hıgh fares and so on. but now thıngs changed. a friend of a friend of a frıend`s friend ıs workıng ın the harbour. and he seems to be able to get me on a ship. I just have to pay the harbour tax -mış. Wow I can`t really believe. I wonder whıch kınd of shıp ıt wıll be.

thıngs I stıll have to do before leavın: change all my not-used hardware ınto a hard-dısk, work one projekt, do some shoppıng, the shoppıng lıst ıst prepared, pack my stuff und leave.

fotos

I still take fotos sometimes. the last film stayed 3 month ın my camera and I guess ıst are the fırst fotos I took with the zenit. I like ıt.
so i will probably some of the fotos the next days. here the first, no one of the last. - I took on an amizing tour through eminönü, but most of the tour I was too exited to shoot.

a classical han in 1970`s architecture

so this is the classical han in the 1970`ıes. basicly its the same as this, a 500 year old karavansaray.

a 16th century karavansaray

so the most exiting was inside the karavansaray. it is like a industrial plant in a mediaval castle. dark gangways and fordist sounds and assesoırs. I`m sure i will resaerch more and try to give a impression of it, but ıt will not be easy to tell ın one foto.

leichsenring in walhalla

Sometimes the death of a person isn`t tragic. Sometimes it is ending the life of a person, who`s action should be stopped. Sometimes there is a chance, a hope, that those who take on this persons role, can`t fill it easily or completely. Some days ago Uwe Leichsen ring died in a traffic crash near Königsstein, a village in “Saxon Switzerland”, South East Germany. Uwe Leichsenring, member of the Parliament of the German state Saxony, is nazi, NPD, and one of those persons being able to establish national socialism as a normal political power, beginning on a local base and local community issues.
In elections to the local mayor he got 25 per cent support. He was leading the local NPD to the third power in Saxon Saxon Switzerland as well as into the states parliament. Of course history is not made by single persons, but loosing some one like him, can`t be sad and there is a chance now, that the structures of (Neo)-Nazism in this region is weakened.

Beside the role of establishing (neo)-nazist politiks on a local base, he integrated young militants, mainly the local SSS, an organisation with several hundreds members in different chapters and levels of hierarchie, in NPD-stuctures. The SSS, offıcially “Skinheads S”achsische Schweiz” but the similarity to the nazi elite organization SS, the organizatıon whoe mainly organized, did the mass murder, the Shoa on millions of people. She startet to train military skills and establish a so called “national befreıte zone” (literally translated: national freed zone) This meant mainly to take control over youth centers, meeting points, hegemony in the streets in evrydays cultural life. in a way a right wring reception of Gramsci. And they took this control violently.
Once I experinced the subtile forms of this control. some where talking about an attack of SSS on some so-called non-right youngsters in the next village. The victims where driven in the river. An other person was entering the scene, not apearently a right-wing scinhead, but you couldn`t estimate on which side he was. All conversation imidiatly stopped. You couldn`t risk the SSS knowing you talking about them.

I`m talking about youth culture. But I don`t want to give the impression, that the presence of neo-nazism is mainly a problem of youth. We find this situation within the last 15 years. the youngsters grew up. some maybe calmed down their hooligan style violence, but they stayed nazis. They are getting positions in the rural society, running their small businesses, sitting in the local administration, having kids and engaging in their kindergardens or schools parents’ association, singing in the local chorus. and so on. Uwe Leichenring is reprenting them and taking care of the youth. Sometimes he garantees the absence of violence to certain events and evrybody, even those who are scared by the brutality and rudeness of semiparamilitarian behavier, is happy to have someone who integrates.

I want to leace the local scene, for sure I can`t say evrything about the situation there now. Uwe Leichring is dead. How is the reaction? Most newspaper stated his death and wrote about his scandalous spech in the landtag, where he stated to want back deportation trains. That`s why he was exluded from parliament sessions for some while. But there is a seenable timidity to appriciate the death. they seem to feel obliged showing empathy reporting his role as father and husband. More: some kind of respect is shown: The president of parliament, the same one who excluded Leichsenring some time ago, was calling the influence of Leichsenring ın the parliament as legetim testing of the borders of democracy. Nobody seems to realize, that these neonazis are not just playing a game, but really try to reestablish Nazism in germany and have first sucesses.

But there is no time for wrong deference. It ıs a chance, that there is a gap in the structures of NPD and its parliamental group. They lost one of there strategıc leader. There might be a chance of disintigration inside the NPD and between the NPD and extra-parliamental nazi organisations. This has to be used and there is no reason to be shy to take advantage from it. It might be a good democratic tradition to pay respect to a political opponent. But it is important not to respect NPD as a political opponent. Their policy isn`t negotiable. So their seems to be a risk, that the death of uwe leichenring has the same effect as his life: the integration of nazism in the political system.

EDIT: İ just found the english version of an article about the NPD parliamental group`s staff. one of them, Rene Despang, will follow Leichsenring as MOP.
