a professor of the TU Dresden denied to accept a student, because she is syrian. according to spiegel.de he explained this by the politic of syria, which is hostile against İsrael and other western countries. He made the student responsible and called on her to change the situation in her country.
This was critisized by an variaty of different institution as racist, discriminating and so on. For sure it is discriminating, but critics from an antinationalist view have to consider the real power of the construction of nations.
Beside the discussion, wether it`s good to act like this, or maybe a better idea to take influance by training syrian citizens to be able to cause a change to democracy in syria, as the cities “auslaenderbeauftragte” suggested. beside the discussion, wether the refusement is violating the individual rights of the student … İ want to emphasize an other point of the discussion. An TUD-spokesman stated, an university teacher shouldn`t “abuse” his function for his “private political ideas” - whats this, either evrything is political or something is either political or private. - so this statement is logical nonsense (thanks to jelena for this point).
And: What kind of idea of fredom of science is backgrounding this. An responsible scientist has to think about, what his knowledge is used for. This trend to establish university as an apolitical sphere is dangerous. even if İ`m not sure, wther İ support his dicission, İ appriciate, he did a political dicission.
