still: potsdam
evrything is said about the black man nerly killed by some racists in potsdams street. There was a huge publicity. Demonstrations of the antiracist Germany. Just as something unusual happened. Other assaults appeared the next days. Good germans were appaled at what happens in the streets.
Yes, evrything you could critisize is critisize. The media is critisizing itself for not talking abut the issue constantly. every some years this happens. in the early 90`ies after the pogrom-like attacks at non-germans in rostock, hoyerswerda and moelln for example, 2001 after antisemitic an antisemitic bombing. The pattern are trained.
first: appalation. then the diskussion about the image. futher: the questioning of the racist/antisemitic background and the critisizm on that questioning. then evrybody is content. business as usual.
There is still no presence of the german reality in evry days public awareness. Who is talking about hoyerswerda in nower days. who is asking about the possibilities to live for a “foreigner” in the german society. And what could happen to make the problem be seen as itself and not to be treated as a PR crisis of the Deutschland AG.
Many say, its not a specific german pattern. but İ disagree. the new germany, founded in the act of “aufarbeitung” of the NS-History, needs the neonazi assaults and the demonstration of the other, the better, germany for self-identification like no other nation. and all the discussion between conservatives and liberals, schaeubles play-down and the success in forcing him to appologize, is just part of this game. İt are just different strategies in image engeneering.
But is this defaetism? is this point of you leading to anything? At least İ`m sure, that this game of germany is constantly saying to itself and the world: evrything is allright - this is dangerous. Nothing is allright. even if it would be possible to fight organized neonazis, nothing would be really allright. Maybe a more critical view from outside could help something, but İ fear germany is self confident enough to give a shit on that, even if they seem to worry about their image.
